Trichilia emetica commonly known as Natal mahogany is an evergreen tree in the family Meliaceae, native to South Africa. It is beautiful tree with sweet scented flowers that attract bees and birds. The scientific name “Trichilia” derives from Greek “tricho” referring to the 3-lobed fruit and the epithet “emetica” refers to the emetic properties of the tree bark.
Natal mahogany butter is extracted from the seeds of fruit. Traditionally South Africans used to apply the butter on cuts and wounds, to heal bones and soothe pain caused by rheumatism.
